In April, seemingly out of the blue, we began receiving donations from Kent. Every few weeks, another gift would show up – always for exactly the same amount – enough to feed 15 kids.
We reached out to say thank you and, when we did, Kent shared a bit of what inspires him.
“I grew up in a single parent family in Northern BC in the 80’s and had a very hard working mother who often was working two jobs just to get by,” Kent explains. “Even still, we were often in the situation of having not enough food in the fridge. Being a small kid and being hungry is hard and can be embarrassing even though it’s out of your control.”
Today, he continues to make regular donations to Backpack Buddies.
“Child hunger has been an ongoing issue forever, but I don’t think people really know that it is a part of their community,” he says. “Families are stretched so thin nowadays and often it’s a choice of paying the Hydro bill or buying extra food. Feeding kids who need it and making sure they have the right nutrients to learn and play everyday should be so basic in Canada…no child should be hungry in this country.”
