Spring is more like a state of mind than an actual season in Vancouver, and it doesn't feel like we're quite there yet. But despite the wet and snowy start to the year, Backpack Buddies has been blooming since January 1st!
Every Friday, when nearly 1,000 students across Metro Vancouver pick up their backpack full of food and snacks for the weekend, they look forward to the moment when they get to untie the bag and peak at what’s inside. One of their favourite parts is discovering what flavour of FreeYumm bar they received this week.
“Imagine trying to focus on schoolwork after two days with little to eat. Your stomach is growling and your blood sugar is low. Food has a huge impact on a kid’s success in school.”
Deborah Upton is a fixture on the Vancouver real estate scene. Having been a Broker Owner under the RE/MAX Crest Realty banner since 1994 and now overseeing 8 offices with 550 associates of RE/MAX Crest, Central and Masters — she knows a thing or two about this city and what’s behind the doors in a neighbourhood.
“Whenever I put up a For Sale sign in a neighbourhood, I always look around the neighbourhood and wonder what’s going on in all those houses and apartments,” she reflects. “I wonder about how the kids are doing -- so often they’re invisible and through RE/MAX’s giving and being a Brokerage that Makes a Difference, we’re just trying to make them a bit more visible.”
